I love this piece Norm. It’s one of the reasons I love living where I do. Last year I went away for a few days and forgot or didn’t bother to tell my elderly neighbours. I really didn’t think I needed to. A couple of days after I left my daughter got a phone call asking if I was ok as the shutters had been closed and they hadn’t seen me.

Another time, it was a different neighbour. It was the day after I’d found out my husband had cheated on me and she noticed the washing was still in the line and it was raining. She came knocking, got me out of bed and asked if I was sick as I was still in my pjs in the afternoon. I considered lying but then just started crying and told her. She gave me a huge hug and came back a bit later with dinner for me.

Now I’m more mindful instead of being my usual British self and not bothering for fear of being a nuisance 🙄😂

Georgia, this support and encouragement we give each other on this platform is unique. I savor and don’t take that for granted. I hear and can feel the vulnerability in what you experienced. AND what great comfort to have someone feel concern for you in their chest AND coupled with the ACTION of actually checking up on you. What a blessing!!!! I appreciate your voice and your energy signature in this space. I take special note of it in my day.

I do feel so blessed to have such amazing people around me and to live in such a caring community.

I'm happy you're doing well 😊 I know why checking in with people is important, If I hadn't had the support of my loved ones, I probably wouldn't still be here.

I love this Norm. Thank you for the reminder to check in on people: family, friends, neighbors. Especially those who are alone. I am lucky to have roommates right now but wonder what will happen when they move on. I appreciate now why my mom would get upset if I didn’t talk to her every day. She worried about ending up like my uncle who had a heart attack and wasn’t found for over a week.

These are critical conversations, Irma. I'm glad I can have them with you. As long as we're in communication, I feel the need to encourage the shift to simple check ins. It doesn't take much to text/call. As you pointed out with your mom's worry, that can easily be alleviated. Hopefully, someone overhears us and incorporates a moment to reach out to someone.
